Welcome to the 100 new readers who joined 7,727 other East Cobb residents this week.

What's up, neighbors!

Pretty mellow weekend coming up, and honestly, Sunday afternoon is what I'd plan the rest of it around.

The Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra is playing KSU’s Bailey Performance Center on Sunday, November 8 at 3:30 PM. Four groups share the bill: the Honors String Quartet, Flute Choir, String Symposium, and Philharmonic. If you’ve got a kid who plays an instrument, bring them. If you don’t, go anyway. Tickets are $10 in advance ($13 at the door) and the whole thing is over in an hour.

Saturday afternoon, the Zuckerman Museum at KSU is hosting a free family day of theater and movement workshops for kids 3 to 12. It starts at 1 PM and it's drop-in. KSU asks for a quick RSVP, but walk-ins are welcome.

For dinner, this week's restaurant is Marietta Fish Market on Canton Rd. Big, loud seafood spot. Huge portions. Saturday nights get packed, so either go early or plan on a wait.

If holiday shopping is creeping onto your list (it's creeping onto mine), check out Urthy in Woodlawn Square. You blend your own scent and they pour it into a candle while you wait. Way more personal than another gift card.

And before you scroll, meet Pam. She's a smart one-year-old pup with the Ozzie Albies Foundation who came back to rescue through no fault of her own, and she gets along with everybody: people, dogs, cats and kids. Her full profile is below.

Let's get into it.

🎻 GYSO November Concert Series

Bailey Performance Center, Kennesaw State University
488 Prillaman Way NW, Kennesaw, GA
Sunday, November 8
3:30–4:30 PM
$10 in advance | $13 at the door
See GYSO concert details

The Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra is playing KSU’s Bailey Performance Center this Sunday afternoon, and they’re bringing four groups with them: the Honors String Quartet, the Flute Choir, the String Symposium, and the Philharmonic. So in one hour you get a tight four-person string group, a whole section of flutes, and a full orchestra. That’s a lot of music for ten bucks.

If you’ve got a kid who plays an instrument (or one who quit and you’re quietly hoping they pick it back up lol), bring them. Seeing kids their own age pull off a full orchestral set can light a fire that practice charts never will. No musician at home? Go anyway. It’s a cheap, one-hour outing that wraps by 4:30 PM, so you’re home well before dinner. Buy online ahead of time and you save $3 a ticket.

The Bailey is on the KSU campus in Kennesaw, a quick shot up I-75 from East Cobb.

🐟 Marietta Fish Market

3185 Canton Rd, Marietta, GA

Some nights you want dinner to be a whole thing. For us, that's Marietta Fish Market on Canton Rd. The place is big, it's loud, and the inside is decked out in this over-the-top ocean theme that sounds cheesy on paper but somehow works once you sit down. My wife and I have brought family here a few times when we needed a spot that could seat a big group and make sure nobody left hungry.

Nobody leaves hungry.

Seafood is the move, and the plates are huge. If you like fried seafood platters, or you just want a lot of food without paying a crazy price for it, you'll be happy here. Plan on a to-go box no matter how hungry you walk in.

One thing before you go. Saturday nights get packed since it’s one of the more popular seafood spots around, so expect a wait at prime dinner time. They open at noon on weekends, so an early dinner (or a late lunch) is the easy way around the crowd.

🕯️ Urthy

1205 Johnson Ferry Rd, Suite 105, Marietta, GA

Most candle shops sell you a scent somebody else picked out. At Urthy in Woodlawn Square, you build your own.

The shop is on Johnson Ferry next to Half Price Books, and it's also the studio where everything gets made. Candles, reed diffusers, room mists, body scrubs and perfume rollers line the shelves, and the team blends most of it right there in front of you. The fun part is the Scent Library. You smell your way through about 30 house scents, mix the ones you like, and they pour your blend into a candle or body butter while you wait. You walk out with something nobody else has.

Want to hang around longer? They run small-group hands-on Labs where you make your own perfume roller (from $45) or a sugar scrub and body butter to take home. Reviews keep calling out the staff by name, which is usually a good sign the people working there actually care. One couple booked a fragrance lab for Valentine's Day and called it a fun, one-of-a-kind date.

And yes, it's gift season. The Holiday Edit has stocking stuffers and gift sets ready to grab. If you're ordering online, get it in by Dec. 18 for Christmas. Walk-ins are welcome, and there's a free lot right out front.

🗳️ Election results: new Post 4 school board member, District 3 still close

Democrat Micheal Garza defeated three-term Republican incumbent David Chastain for the Post 4 seat on the Cobb Board of Education, according to unofficial results reported by East Cobb News. The Marietta Daily Journal reports the result gives Democrats a majority on the school board.

The Cobb Commission District 3 race, which covers most of East Cobb, came down to the wire. In unofficial county results, Democrat Kevin Redmon has 48,712 votes (50.28 percent) to 48,163 (49.72 percent) for four-term Republican incumbent JoAnn Birrell. Under Georgia law, a losing candidate within 0.5 percent can request a recount, and East Cobb News puts Redmon's lead at 0.56 percent. Nothing is final until the county certifies the results.

Cobb voters also approved the SPLOST renewal, with 62 percent voting yes, per East Cobb News. The new six-year collection period starts in 2028. The Board of Elections holds its pre-certification meeting Friday at 3 PM, and it's in the planner below.

🔒 Cobb Sheriff's Office moves jail safety checks to digital handhelds

The Cobb County Sheriff's Office is getting rid of the paper safety logs at the Adult Detention Center. Staff now carry GUARDIAN RFID handheld devices and log safety rounds, inmate interactions and medical visits in real time. If a check runs late or gets missed, digital timers and automated alerts flag it. The new system plugs into the jail's existing ViaPath Jail Management System.

The Sheriff's Office says it's the first agency in metro Atlanta to use the system. The announcement didn't include a cost.

🚌 Cobb's on-demand microtransit expands into Kennesaw and Acworth

Cobb County's on-demand microtransit service started as a pilot in 2024, and it just got bigger. It now covers parts of Kennesaw and Acworth, after running only in Austell, Powder Springs and the southwest corner of Marietta. Rides are $2.50, and federal and state grants pick up about 90% of the cost.

Commissioners approved the expansion in August on a 3-2 vote. Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid has promoted the program. Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Keli Gambrill voted no, and Birrell objected that the service isn't limited to seniors, low-income residents or people with disabilities. It still doesn't reach East Cobb, so if you've wondered whether it ever will, this is the program to keep an eye on.

🎄 Cobb PARKS Holiday Artisan Market returns Dec. 4-6

The 3rd annual Cobb PARKS Holiday Artisan Market is back Dec. 4 to 6 at the Cobb County Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway SE, Marietta, GA 30060. On Saturday, Dec. 5, there's also a Youth Merry Marketplace with young vendors ages 10 to 17 selling their own stuff.

Vendor applications closed Nov. 4. Admission and hours haven't been announced yet, and we'll pass them along when they are. If you like knocking out gifts locally, pencil in that weekend now.

🐾 Meet Pam

Young, Black Mouth Cur/Miniature Pinscher

Her mom was a little Pinscher mix who got rescued while she was pregnant, and this girl got to stay with her until she was 10 weeks old. That's a better start than a lot of rescue dogs get. She went home with a family as a puppy and spent her first year there. Then that family hit some big life changes they couldn't control and made the hard call to bring her back. Not her fault. Her name is Pam, and she's ready for round two.

She's one year old, about 35 pounds, and a real social butterfly. New people, other dogs, cats, kids, she's into all of it. She's also smart. The rescue says she picks things up fast and likes having a job to do. When she's done showing off, she's lying in a patch of sun or parked right next to her people.

The honest part: she's still a young dog, and most dogs don't fully settle until around two. Pam needs a family ready for some patience and a steady routine while she finishes growing up. You won't be doing it alone, though. She's part of the Ozzie Albies Foundation's Best Chance Program, which includes training sessions with their partner trainers, updated vaccines, her spay through a partner vet, and support for as long as you have her. If life ever changes, she always has a place to go back to.

The foundation is based in Marietta and only responds to people who've filled out the adoption application, so start there. Next comes a quick interview, then a meet and greet. Her listing shows a $0 adoption fee. Georgia adoptions only.

No tickets and no time slots. Show up any time after 1 PM and let the kids go where their interest takes them.

What it is: The day is built around the museum's current exhibition, Collective Geometries. KSU Theatre and Performance Studies students lead Arts Integration workshops for kids ages 3 through 12, mixing movement, play and theater-making so kids find math ideas in places they'd never expect. On top of that, KSU's Year of Thailand, North Cobb Library and Smith-Gilbert Gardens each run their own hands-on activities tied to the exhibition. That's a lot packed into one free Saturday afternoon.

Plan it (drop-in, starts at 1 PM): It’s drop-in, so there’s no slot to lock in. KSU does ask families to RSVP on the museum’s events page. It takes a minute and helps them plan. Things kick off at 1 PM, and you can come and go whenever you want. The museum is on the KSU campus in Kennesaw, a quick shot up I-75 from East Cobb.

Inside (1-2 hours): The structure is loose on purpose. Kids can bounce between the theater workshops, hit the partner tables, and spend some time actually looking at the art that inspired the whole day. College theater students run the workshops, so expect a lot of energy, a lot of encouragement and a lot of moving around. If you've got elementary-age kids who fall apart the second they're told to sit quietly and watch, this one plays to their strengths.

Logistics: Free. The museum is at 492 Prillaman Way NW on the KSU campus in Kennesaw, GA. RSVP requested, but walk-ins are welcome.

Heads up: The workshops are built for ages 3 to 12. If you're bringing a baby under 3 or a teenager, the structured activities probably won't land, but the exhibition itself is open to everyone.

Deer Season Is Here: Check That Your Car Policy Has Comprehensive Coverage

💡 Insurance Tip: What Pays If You Hit a Deer

Deer collisions peak in October, November and December, when breeding season puts more deer on the road and dusk commutes get darker. Atlanta News First reports that one in every 115 Georgia drivers will collide with an animal, based on insurer claims data. Hitting a deer directly is typically covered under comprehensive coverage, while swerving and hitting a tree or guardrail is generally a collision claim. Georgia only requires liability insurance, so if you carry the state minimum, a deer strike could come out of your own pocket, and either coverage is still subject to your deductible.

Worth a quick check this week: confirm comprehensive is on every vehicle in your household, and know your deductible. A Peachy agent can check both on a quick call.
