What's up, neighbors!

Easiest way to close out the week: Sunset Sips at the Chattahoochee Nature Center is tonight. Doors at 6, music at 7, a husband-and-wife duo called Sainte Jane on the Great Lawn, and a drink in your hand while the sun goes down over the river. It’s $20, free if you're a member.

Friday is the big one. We're grabbing a blanket and heading up to Roswell City Hall for the last Music on the Hill of the year, a free country show on the lawn where you bring your own picnic. If football is more your speed, Kell plays at Lassiter and Harrison is at Wheeler, both kicking off at 7:30.

Saturday we're running our usual loop. Farmers market on the Square with coffee, then a walk through the artisan market on Mill Street. Got little ones? The Georgia Symphony is playing movie music at the Anderson Theatre for free, sensory-friendly show at 2 and a regular one at 4. You do have to reserve a seat, so don’t just show up.

Sunday we're leaning toward the Sankofa Festival at Glover Park. Music, food, vendors, and free to get in.

Sunset Sips is exactly what it sounds like. You show up at the Nature Center on a Thursday evening, you find a spot on the Great Lawn, and at 7 a band starts playing while the sun drops behind the river.

This week it’s Sainte Jane, an Americana duo built around singer-songwriters Lauren St. Jane and Jeremy Ezell, who used to front an Atlanta band called The Well Reds. Easy, soulful, and well suited to a lawn chair.

Two things to know before you go. There’s a cash bar on site, and outside alcohol isn’t allowed, so this is not the BYO-bottle situation that Music on the Hill is. And it runs rain or shine, with the covered pavilion open first-come, first-served if the sky turns.

Get there before the music if you can. The Nature Center is about 20 minutes from East Cobb, up Johnson Ferry and across the river.

The Nature Center runs extended hours for Sunset Sips, so you can walk the Wildlife Walk, the River Boardwalk, and the shaded trails first. Seeing that place at dusk instead of at noon is a completely different experience.

Members get in free and can reserve tickets online. Everybody else, grab advance tickets for Sunset Sips before Thursday. Walk-up admission depends on capacity.

And if tonight doesn’t work, September 24 is the last one of the season, with Marcella Jones and the Brown Liquor Band. After that it’s June.

Every few months somebody tells me they can’t find good Indian food in Marietta. Turmeric is my answer. It’s on Sandy Plains, easy to get in and out of, and the food holds up across the whole menu, not just the two or three dishes a place gets known for.

The lunch specials are what reviewers keep coming back to, and I get why. You eat well for a lot less than dinner, and it lets you try things you probably wouldn’t order at full price.

One catch: they are closed Mondays.

Rhythm Dance Center has been teaching East Cobb kids to plie and shuffle-step since 1993. This fall they start season 34 in a brand new building.

Co-owners Becca Moore and Dani Rosenberg moved the whole operation off Shallowford Road and into East Cobb Crossing, at Roswell and Johnson Ferry. They describe the new space as nearly 30,000 square feet. For a studio that started in one room and now teaches more than 1,200 kids, that’s a pretty good 34 seasons.

Classes cover ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, acro and musical theater, ages 2 1/2 up through 18. Little ones get preschool programs like Twirl and Fairytale Ballet. Kids who want to push it have a Boys class, Spirit Squad and performance companies. There are adult classes too, if you have been telling yourself for a decade that you would get back on a dance floor eventually.

The season already started August 17, but registration is still open and they will set up a free trial class before you commit to anything.

So if you have a kid at home who has been wearing a tutu to the grocery store, start here. Parents talk most about the teachers and the year-end productions. Fair warning from those same parents: costume and performance costs add up. That’s true at every studio in the county, not just this one.

Cobb County Police filled two town halls last week, Monday, August 31 at Sewell Mill Library on Lower Roswell Road and Tuesday, September 1 at West Cobb Senior Center, taking questions about 182 Flock license plate cameras the department leases countywide. Those cameras generate roughly 2,000 alerts a month for stolen vehicles, missing persons and wanted suspects.

Chief Dan Ferrell told the room that annual audits have turned up no Cobb officers misusing the system, and that the department is moving to monthly public audits and will update its policy based on the feedback. Commission Chair Lisa Cupid, speaking at an earlier session in the series, said she is confident the cameras have helped drive down crime. Not everybody left satisfied, which is part of why there is one more session: Tuesday, September 15, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the North Cobb Senior Center in Acworth.

Then it got very local, and the timing was hard to miss. A few hours after the East Cobb town hall wrapped Monday night, someone shot projectiles at Flock cameras at East Cobb Park and at the Home Depot on Roswell Road. Several caught fire. One pole was left with a "DEFLOCK" sticker on it. On Thursday, police charged 25-year-old Colby Williams of McDonough with arson and criminal damage.

Investigators say they identified his gray 2013 Volkswagen using the Flock network itself. The cameras caught the guy accused of burning the cameras.

Chattahoochee Technical College put nearly $1 million of new funding into the heating and air conditioning program at its Marietta campus, and the school says the expanded program will be one of the largest in Georgia. About 250 students are enrolled right now. Instructor Chris Heenan puts the nationwide shortage of HVAC technicians at more than 110,000.

If you have a kid at home who isn’t sold on a four-year school, this is worth bringing up at dinner. Two years, a few miles down the road, and it lands them in a trade where the work is not going anywhere.

Ask anybody whose AC quit in August what a good HVAC tech is worth.

The Cobb Planning Commission voted 4-0 on Tuesday, September 1 to recommend denial of Eastside Church's plan to turn 8.65 acres of mostly unused parking at Lower Roswell Road and Little Road into The Haven at Eastside: a 95-unit assisted living building plus eight independent cottages.

Vice chairwoman Deborah Dance, who represents District 3, made the motion to deny, calling it "not a fit for a low-density, walkable residential neighborhood." The vote was 4-0 with chairwoman Nadia Faucette absent.

The neighbors showed up. 57 people spoke against the project, while 21 showed up in support. Online, 45 people were opposed and two were in favor. The objections landed on traffic, density, stormwater, and whether a building that size fits next to single-family streets. Red Oak Park and the streets around it were out in force.

But the commission only gets to recommend. The Cobb Board of Commissioners has the final say at its zoning hearing on Tuesday, September 15. If you live off Lower Roswell, that’s the meeting that actually decides it.

Fin & Feathers, the Atlanta-based "elevated dining meets Southern soul" spot, soft opened last month at 16 Atlanta Street SE, the space that most recently held Carmen's Kitchen & Cocktails, right across from Johnnie MacCracken's. The menu runs fried catfish, wings and shrimp and grits on one end, lamb chops and ribeyes on the other, plus weekend brunch and a craft cocktail list.

Two things to know before you make plans. The restaurant's website lists it as 21-and-up, and it adds a 20 percent service charge to every check. So plan this as a date night or a night out with friends, not a Tuesday family dinner. No grand opening date announced yet.

Marietta's award-winning Coffee, Campfires, and Cryptids is back on Friday, September 18 at Atherton Square Park (4 Depot Street NE, downtown Marietta), starting at 6 p.m. and free to attend. Cryptid trivia at 6. Costume contest at 7. Puppeteer Damon Young's shadow puppet show "Cabinet of Curious Cryptids" at 8. In between there is a drop-in puppet-making workshop, vendors and s'mores.

Short drive, no admission, and it works for a 10-year-old and for a grown adult who spent middle school reading about Mothman. Bring a costume if you want a shot at the contest.

Buttercup is an 18-pound sheltie and shih tzu mix, about four years old, at Mostly Mutts in Kennesaw. She came in timid and shy, and her foster family says she has turned into the life of the party since: snuggles, playtime, and a curious, puppy-like streak that has nothing to do with her age.

She bonds fast with her people and gets along with other dogs once introductions are done properly. The foster cats get ignored, which is about the best review a cat household can hope for.

A couple of honest notes from her foster: she likes to bolt for an open door, she has wriggled out of a harness before, and new people should say hello slowly, on leash. She is still learning to play gently, so Mostly Mutts is looking for a patient family with kids 11 and up.

Music on the Hill is the series East Cobb folks tend to find once and then keep showing up for every month after. This Friday it’s Nashville Nation, a high-energy country band playing sing-along country anthems, and it’s the last show of the 2026 season.

After this one, the next Music on the Hill is May.

What it is: A free outdoor concert series on the lawn at Roswell City Hall, second Friday of the month, May through September. This year's lineup tied into Roswell's America250 celebration, with each show built around music that helped define American culture. Top Job Beverage and Events and Gate City Brewing Company sell beer, wine and sangria on site.

Plan it (get there by 6:30 PM): The lawn fills in as the evening goes on. Showing up 20 to 30 minutes early is the difference between a real spot and the back edge. Bring a blanket or low-back chairs and pack a picnic. The city's own listing tells you to "unpack your picnic, uncork a bottle," so BYO isn’t just tolerated, it’s the whole idea.

Getting there: Roswell City Hall is about 15 minutes from East Cobb, right in historic downtown Roswell. Street spots and surface lots are close by and generally free on weekend evenings.

At the show (2 hours): Nashville Nation plays the full two hours, contemporary country hits and crowd-pleasers. Kids running around on the grass, couples on blankets, groups of neighbors staking out their corner. Very Roswell Friday night.

Logistics: Free admission, no registration. Restrooms at City Hall. Leashed dogs are usually fine at Roswell outdoor events.

Heads up: The beer and wine tents cost money, so bring cash or a card if you are not packing your own. And this being the finale, plan on a bigger crowd than a normal month.
