Welcome to the 51 new readers who joined 7,470 other East Cobb residents this week.

What's up, neighbors!

October is here, and it's opening with about as East Cobb a Saturday as it gets. The EAST COBBER Parade & Festival got bumped from its usual September date, so this year you line Johnson Ferry for candy and marching bands on October 3, then walk over to the festival for inflatables and food. Johnson Ferry closes from 9:45 to 11:30, so park early or walk in.

Roswell's 76th Youth Day parade runs the same morning, so pick one parade this year and save the other for next. Either way, Saturday looks dry so far.

Friday night, the Marietta Square Art Walk keeps its 20th-anniversary year rolling. Its free, and a good excuse for dinner on the Square.

For a fancier Sunday night, Smith-Gilbert Gardens is doing a three-course garden dinner with wine pairings. It's outdoors, rain or shine, and Sunday looks wet. Tickets are nonrefundable, so check the forecast first.

On the news side, two stories could actually change your neighborhood. Cobb proposed new rules for backyard cottages and data centers, and the Johnson Ferry and Shallowford fix finally got the green light. Just don't get excited yet. Construction doesn't start until fall 2027.

Scroll down for the spot on the Chattahoochee my wife and I pick when we want to put our phones away, the jeweler by the Parkaire Kroger who can fix your junk drawer, and Atlas, a five-year-old hound who waits on the rug for you to take his leash off.

🥁 EAST COBBER Parade & Festival

Johnson Ferry Road and Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta, GA
Saturday, October 3, 2026
Parade 10:00 AM, festival 11:00 AM-2:00 PM
Free

If you've lived here more than a year, you already know how this morning goes. Lawn chairs on the curb by 9. Kids holding out grocery bags for candy. Neighbors you haven't seen since last fall waving at you from a float.

And it's big. More than 2,000 participants and about 110 entries (scout troops, school bands, floats, classic cars, local businesses) roll one mile down Johnson Ferry Road. Honestly, it's the closest thing East Cobb has to a hometown holiday.

The big change this year is the date. It's normally mid-September, but publisher Laren Brown told East Cobb News they "fell victim to the calendar" between Labor Day, Rosh Hashanah and Cobb's fall break. So October it is.

Here's how the morning plays out. The parade steps off at 10 AM from the Princeton Lakes entrance near Mt. Bethel Elementary and heads south to Olde Towne Parkway. If you care about shade or being close to your car, look at the full parade route and closures before you pick your patch of curb.

Once the last float rolls by, walk over to the festival in the north lot of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Rd). It runs 11 AM to 2 PM with food, music, games, inflatables, arts and crafts, and booths from neighborhood businesses and nonprofits. If your kids are like most kids, you'll spend the bulk of those three hours standing next to the inflatables (lol).

Now the part nobody likes. Johnson Ferry is fully closed in both directions between Roswell Road and Lower Roswell Road from 9:45 to 11:30 AM, and Woodlawn Drive between, so park early or plan to walk in. There's no rain date either. Light rain won't cancel it, and Cobb Police make the storm call at 9 AM, so check the EAST COBBER rain policy if the sky looks iffy that morning.

🥗 Ray's on the River

6700 Powers Ferry Rd NW, Sandy Springs, GA

Some nights you just want food. Other nights my wife and I want to actually sit somewhere nice, put the phones away, and slow down for a couple hours. For the second one, Ray's on the River is where we usually end up.

It sits right on the Chattahoochee off Powers Ferry, and the river view does a lot of the work. This is anniversary dinner territory. Birthday dinner. The dinner you plan a week out and actually look forward to.

The menu leans elevated Southern seafood, and the room feels intimate without being stuffy. Plenty of places coast on a pretty view, but a 4.6 rating across nearly 11,500 reviews tells you the kitchen is holding up its end too.

One heads up: Sunday runs split hours (11 AM to 4 PM, then 5 to 9 PM), so check the clock before you go if Sunday is your night.

💎 Adamark Jewelers & Silversmiths

4880 Lower Roswell Rd, Suite 175, Marietta, GA 30068

Be honest. You have a drawer. Somewhere in your house there's a broken chain, a watch that died years ago, and maybe Grandma's silver that nobody in the family knows what to do with. (If you don't have this drawer, I'm impressed.)

Mark Geller is the guy you bring that drawer to.

He's a second-generation jeweler and silversmith. He's run Adamark since 1982 and moved the shop to Parkaire Landing (the Kroger center on Lower Roswell) in 2007, so there's a decent chance you've driven past it a hundred times. The cases are full of estate and vintage jewelry, from Art Deco platinum rings to 1970s gold and jade earrings, plus pre-owned watches.

But the cases aren't really why people go. The repair bench is. Watch and jewelry fixes, engraving, pearl restringing and appraisals all happen in-house, and most small jobs get done while you wait. He also repairs and replates silver holloware (teapots, trays, serving pieces), and finding someone local who still does that gets harder every year.

Reviews say the same things over and over: quick turnaround, fair prices, and Mark takes his time sorting through sterling instead of rushing you. Thinking about selling old gold or sterling flatware? You can walk in for a free evaluation, no appointment needed. One catch: they don't buy silver-plated pieces, so leave those at home.

It's a small shop, it closes at 4 PM on Saturdays, and it's closed Sundays. A weekday or Saturday morning stop is your best bet.

Hours:

🏠 Cobb proposes new rules for backyard cottages and data centers

If you've ever thought about building an in-law suite or a backyard cottage for an aging parent, pay attention to this one. Cobb County is taking another run at rules for accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and the proposed code changes would cap one at 850 square feet or half the size of the main house, whichever is smaller. It would also have to be single-story and sit in the rear yard.

There are strings attached. The owner has to live on the property, short-term rentals like Airbnb are off the table, and each ADU needs its own off-street parking space. This isn't the county's first try, either. A similar proposal got pulled in late 2024 after residents pushed back.

The same package also sets rules for data centers: sites of 5 to 30 acres, power generated off-site, closed-loop water systems, and limits on noise, lighting and equipment height. Want to weigh in? The Planning Commission takes it up October 6 at 9 AM, commissioners hold hearings October 13 at 9 AM, and the vote is October 27 at 7 PM. All three are at 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta.

🚦 Johnson Ferry and Shallowford intersection upgrade gets the green light

If you've sat through three light cycles at Johnson Ferry and Shallowford, you're not alone. It's one of East Cobb's most complained-about intersections, and September 22 commissioners unanimously approved a $2.3 million fix. Westbound Shallowford gets two through lanes and two left-turn lanes, plus raised medians, new signals and pedestrian upgrades.

Now the bad news. Don't expect orange barrels anytime soon. Design is slated for March 2027, construction for September 2027, and completion around September 2028. So yeah, about two more years of sitting at that light.

"This is a much needed project," said Commissioner JoAnn Birrell. I don't think anyone who drives it daily would argue.

🚧 Trickum Road closed for sinkhole repairs through October 20

If Trickum Road is part of your commute, you've probably already found this out the hard way. The county closed the stretch between Jamerson Road and Shallowford Road on September 21 for sinkhole and drainage repairs, and it's expected to stay closed until October 20, weather permitting. Figure out your detour now instead of at 7:45 on a Tuesday morning.

Heading south of town on a weekend? GDOT's I-285 Westside rebuild has a full closure nearly every weekend through the end of the year (Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends are off), from Friday at 7 PM to Monday at 5 AM. This weekend (Oct 2-5) it's the stretch from Cascade Road to Langford Parkway. The South Cobb Drive segments come later this fall, so bookmark the full I-285 closure schedule if you use that side of the Perimeter.

⚖️ Parents' free-speech suit against Cobb schools is now before a federal appeals court

A lawsuit over a September 2023 Cobb school board meeting is moving up the ladder. Parents Jennifer Peterson and Melissa Marten say district staff moved the sign-up tablets outside just minutes before sign-up opened, and that critics of the superintendent lost their speaking spots to supporters as a result.

This spring, a federal judge refused to dismiss the case. The district then appealed to the 11th Circuit, arguing qualified immunity (a legal shield that can protect government employees from being sued personally). The district says it "disputes the allegation that staff manipulated public comment based on anyone's viewpoint."

Whichever way it goes, the case is about something every Cobb parent has a stake in: who gets to speak at school board meetings, and how that line gets managed.

🔎 Cobb police ask for help finding two missing 16-year-olds

Cobb County police are asking for help finding Faith French and Joseph Ibe, both 16. Police put out the call last week and currently list both as runaways.

Faith (5'5", 120 lbs) was last seen wearing pink shorts, a gray t-shirt and no shoes. Joseph (6'2", 160 lbs) was last seen in a black shirt, blue and black pants and black boots.

If you've seen either of them, or you hear something through your own kids, call 911 or Cobb County Police at 770-499-3945. Passing this along to a neighbor doesn't hurt either.

🍦 Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is coming to Avenue East Cobb

Remember when Press Waffle Co. closed at The Avenue back in February? That space finally has a new tenant. Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is moving into The Avenue East Cobb (4475 Roswell Road), making it the chain's third Cobb shop, with 20+ rotating flavors including dairy-free options.

There's no opening date yet beyond "later in 2026." But I already know where our after-dinner walks are headed once it does.

🐾 Meet Atlas

5-year-old Hound Mix

When Atlas first got to his foster home, he picked one corner of the living room couch and decided that was his spot. His safe spot. He didn't leave it much.

Then, slowly, the fear gave way to tail wags. Now his foster family gets to watch his playful side come out a little more every day.

He's about five years old, a 53-pound hound mix with a gentle, sensitive streak. It takes him a minute to trust you. Once he does, he'll roll right over for a belly rub.

He already knows down, stay, come and place, and he just started chasing tennis balls. His favorite things are hikes, car rides and slow, sniffy laps around the yard. And after every walk, he sits on the rug by the door and waits for you to take his leash off. Good manners, this guy.

He's shy with new people, so he needs a calm home and a family willing to be patient with him. He's good with other dogs and did great around respectful kids about 10 years old. Toddlers and a loud, busy house? Not his speed.

A few practical notes. He had a bit of an escape-artist streak at the shelter, so keep an eye on him in the yard while he settles in. On the plus side, his potty manners are very good, he's already done with the crate, and thunderstorms and bath time don't faze him at all.

Atlas is neutered, microchipped and current on vaccines. His $299 adoption fee also includes free lifetime training classes, which is a pretty great deal. He lives in foster, so start with the Mostly Mutts adoption application and they'll set up a meet-and-greet at the Kennesaw shelter.

🎃 Roswell's 76th Annual Youth Day Celebration

Historic Canton Street and Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill St, Roswell, GA

Some small-town traditions just refuse to get old. Roswell's Youth Day started in 1950, when a group of parents put together a day of activities for the town's kids, and a year later the mayor made it official.

Seventy-six years later, it's still a parade, a petting zoo and a whole afternoon built around kids. And it still costs exactly zero dollars.

What it is: The Youth Day Celebration is put on by the City of Roswell, and this year's theme is "Tapestry of Generations," tied to the country's 250th birthday. The morning opens with the Frances McGahee Parade down Canton Street. After that, the area around City Hall turns into three zones: an Art Block, a Fall Farmyard and a Truck Zone.

Plan it (arrive by 9:30): Roads close by 9:45 AM, so get parked and grab a curb spot on Canton Street before then. There's free public parking at Roswell City Hall. The lot at Roswell Area Park is for parade participants only, and there are no shuttles.

After the parade (11:00 AM-2:00 PM): The Art Block at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center has hands-on craft booths from local businesses plus live cirque performers. Over on the Archibald Smith Plantation grounds, the Fall Farmyard has farm animals to pet, candle-dipping demos and pumpkin decorating. Kids who love anything with wheels can climb around community vehicles in the Truck Zone, and Food Truck Alley covers lunch.

Logistics: Admission and activities are free, and there's nothing to register for. Food trucks are pay-as-you-go. Text ROSWELLEvent to 888777 for real-time updates on the day.

Heads up: The city hasn't posted a rain plan, so watch those text alerts if the forecast turns. It also runs at the same time as the EAST COBBER Parade, so pick one parade this year and save the other for next.

💡 Insurance Tip: Your flood policy might pay less than it costs to replace your stuff

Here's a flood insurance detail you really want to know before the water shows up, not after. If your flood policy is through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), it pays for your personal belongings at actual cash value. That means depreciation comes out before you ever see a check.

So say your five-year-old couch gets ruined. The claim doesn't pay what a new couch costs today. It pays what a five-year-old couch is worth, which is a lot less. Some private flood insurers offer replacement cost coverage on contents as an add-on, which gets you much closer to what it actually costs to buy the thing again.

If you've had your flood policy for years and never looked at how contents get paid out, this is a good week to ask. You can also read how flood coverage works from the Insurance Information Institute.

Not sure how your current flood policy handles contents claims? Have your Peachy agent check your flood contents coverage.
