This is the last weekend of summer break. Cobb kids go back Monday, so if you've got a "we should do that before school starts" list, this is the weekend to knock it out.

Saturday night is the last Scene on the Green of the summer. The School of Rock East Cobb house band plays a live set at 6:30 at The Art Place on Sandy Plains, then the actual movie goes up on the big screen after. It's free. Doors open at 6, and that's when we're getting there, blankets and camp chairs, staking out grass before it fills in. Rain is in the forecast too, and if it moves indoors the seating is first come first served, so early matters more than usual this time.

Sunday afternoon we're eyeing the Dave Brubeck tribute at the Strand. Four o'clock start, one act, no intermission, done by 5:30. Tickets are about $32. If you grew up on Time Out, that's an easy yes.

If "Take Five" has ever come on and you just stopped whatever you were doing, clear your Sunday.

The Jazz Legacy Project is bringing the whole Brubeck story to the Strand. Time Out is one of the best selling jazz albums ever made, and they play through it live while telling you about the stands Brubeck took during the civil rights movement. That part usually gets left out. Knowing it changes how the music lands.

The format is easy. One act, no intermission, out the door by 5:30. You get a real afternoon out and still have your Sunday evening.

This is a ONE night thing, and it is ten minutes from your driveway. If you grew up on this record, go get seats before your neighbors do.

Los Bravos has been around long enough that a lot of people in the area already have it in their rotation. The food is good and it works for a casual weeknight dinner, a family lunch, or just grabbing something quick when you're in the area.

The food side of things is what keeps people coming back. Long-time regulars swear by it, and with 884 reviews at a 4.2 that's not an accident.

Fair heads up on the drinks though: if you're planning to do margaritas, reviewers who've been going for years have noticed the bar prices have climbed pretty noticeably compared to other spots nearby. Go for the food, just don't be caught off guard when the drink tab comes.

Cross country practice starts soon, and every fall there's a scramble to find real running shoes for a kid whose feet grew two sizes over the summer. The Big Peach on Johnson Ferry is the spot for that errand.

They film you (or your kid) running on a treadmill, scan your feet, and then bring out shoes that match how you actually run. The gait analysis is free and nobody hovers or upsells.

They stock Brooks, HOKA, ASICS, On, Saucony, and New Balance, and the staff are runners themselves, so you get real answers instead of a shrug. GDOT pushed back its planned full closure of I-285 through Cobb County after weather concerns forced a postponement from this past weekend.

The rescheduled closure is now set for next week on August 7 at 7 p.m. until August 10 at 5 a.m. for the two-mile stretch between South Atlanta Road and Paces Ferry Road. This is a full interstate closure, not a lane reduction, so the impact on commutes near East Cobb will be significant.

If you regularly use I-285 for airport runs or I-20 west, now is a good time to map alternate routes. GDOT typically releases detour guidance ahead of planned closures, so keep an eye on the 511GA app or GDOT's site for timing specifics as the date firms up.

A partnership between Vision To Learn and the Cobb County Library system has been quietly doing important work this summer: getting free glasses to students who need them before the school year kicks off.

The program ran summer clinics across the county and is part of a longer push to close the vision care gap for kids who otherwise wouldn't have access.

Anslee McCauley of Marietta, competing with Georgia All-Star Gymnastics, has been named among the junior qualifiers for the 2026 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships. The full qualifier list was recently released by USA Gymnastics.

It's a big deal to make this field as a junior, and it's a nice East Cobb kid-does-good story. The championships are August 6-9 in Phoenix.

Worth a shoutout to the Georgia All-Star Gymnastics program for producing a national-level competitor right here in the community.

A Cobb County trucking company that has been operating for over 40 years told FOX 5 this week that diesel costs have jumped 33 percent. With diesel approaching $5 a gallon in Georgia, carriers are scrambling to cut costs and adjust routes.

This one hits closer to home than it might seem. Higher trucking costs eventually show up in grocery prices, delivery fees, and supply timelines for local businesses. If you've noticed prices creeping up at the store or longer waits on deliveries, this is part of the reason why.

The name alone earns him a look, but the cat behind it is the real draw. Florida Man is a four-year-old Egyptian Mau, a handsome brown tabby who came to Good Mews from a county shelter and has been charming everyone there ever since.

He is sweet, affectionate, and a champion biscuit-maker who will happily settle in next to you for as much attention as you are willing to hand out. He is also curious and playful, the kind of cat who likes a little action in the house rather than a quiet corner.

Here is the honest part. He was adopted recently and came back, not for anything he did wrong, but because he really wants to get outside. He would cry at night and make a run for the door. He would be happiest in a home with room to roam or a screened porch or “catio” where he can watch the world go by safely. Give him that and you get a devoted companion.

He is also FIV+, which sounds scarier than it is. FIV+ cats live long, healthy lives and can share a home with other cats as long as everyone gets along.

This Saturday night, The Art Place at Mountain View is hosting the final Scene on the Green of the season, and they saved a good one for last: a live rock performance followed by a screening of School of Rock under the open sky.

What it is: Scene on the Green is Cobb County Parks and Recreation's free outdoor movie series, and this closing night pairs a live preshow with a full film screening. Doors open at 6 PM, and the East Cobb House Band from School of Rock kicks things off at 6:30 PM with a live set before the movie rolls. Then at 7:30 PM, School of Rock (the 2003 Jack Black classic, rated PG-13, runtime about 1 hour 48 minutes) plays on the big screen. Games and preshow activities are part of the evening too.

Plan it (get there at 6): Doors open at 6 PM and the live set starts at 6:30, so arriving right at opening gives you time to stake out a decent patch of grass before the crowd builds. Bring a blanket or low chairs, snacks, and layers if the evening cools off. The event runs until 9:30 PM, which means you're looking at a full three-and-a-half-hour night out.

At the show (3 hours): The preshow is legitimately worth getting there for. The School of Rock East Cobb House Band is a real student performance group, and watching kids actually rip through rock songs before a movie about a guy who teaches kids to rip through rock songs is a pretty satisfying setup. There's some language and adult humor scattered through the movie, so parents of younger kids should use their judgment.

Heads up: The forecast as of the time of writing this edition shows possible rain. If weather rolls in, the event moves inside the building. Indoor seating is more limited and first come, first served, so arriving early is advised.

Hurricane season runs through November 30, and the busiest stretch is mid-August into October. But hurricanes are not really what gets us up here. In Cobb County the damage comes from summer thunderstorms, straight line wind, and hail. Tropical systems that make it this far inland show up as wind and rain, not as a hurricane.

That matters because of how your policy is written.

Your homeowners policy has a standard deductible, probably somewhere around $1,000. A lot of Georgia policies also carry a separate deductible just for wind and hail damage, and that one is often written as a percentage of your dwelling coverage instead of a flat dollar amount. Usually between 1% and 5%.

Here is what that looks like in real money. If your dwelling coverage is $500,000 and your wind and hail deductible is 2%, you are covering the first $10,000 of a hail claim yourself.

One thing people mix up. A wind and hail deductible applies to any wind event, including an ordinary thunderstorm or a tornado. A named storm or hurricane deductible is different: it only kicks in once the National Hurricane Center actually names the storm, and in Georgia those show up mostly on coastal policies in counties like Chatham, Glynn, and Camden. So if you own a place down on the coast, that is a second set of documents worth pulling out.

And no homeowners policy covers flooding. Storm surge and rising water need a separate flood policy.

How to check, about two minutes. Pull up your declarations page, the summary your insurer sends at renewal. Find your dwelling coverage limit, listed as Coverage A. Then read the deductible section and look for a percentage sign next to wind or hail. Georgia requires insurers to disclose percentage deductibles in your policy documents, so it is in there somewhere.

Starting pay is $16.87 an hour with no experience at all, and higher if you've worked food service before. Shifts run five to six hours somewhere between 6 AM and 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, only on days school is in session. No nights. No weekends. School holidays and summers off. Health insurance is available for single or family coverage.

They train you, so kitchen experience is a plus but not a requirement. They also keep a substitute list if you'd rather set your own days and workdays.

$150 for a full day. The minimum is one full day per calendar month and the ceiling is 15 days a month, so you decide how much you work.

You need a high school diploma or equivalency plus 60 semester hours of college credit with a C average or better, or equivalent experience in education. A teaching certificate or bachelor's is preferred. Two references, an orientation, and a background check are all part of it, and the fingerprinting fee is currently $51.50 out of your own pocket. ASP runs from dismissal until 6 PM every school day, so the shift is short and it lands in the afternoon. It's a good match if your own kids are already in the program, or if you're retired and want a few hours with elementary-age kids. Custodial and clerical roles post year round through the same classified board.

Not a school job, but it's the other large local employer worth knowing. About 5,000 people work here across parks and rec, libraries, courts, water, public safety support, and administration. Four medical plan options, dental, life insurance, a hybrid pension, an employee wellness clinic, and two fitness centers. Plenty of part-time roles capped at 29 hours a week if full-time isn't what you're after.
