Welcome to the 88 new readers who joined 6,380 other East Cobb residents this week.

What's up, neighbors!

The Braves are trying something new this Saturday. They're turning Truist Park and The Battery into a full country music festival, the first one they've ever thrown. There's a paid concert inside with Cody Johnson headlining, but here's what I like about it: everything over at The Battery is free. Live music, activations, and a lineup of up-and-coming acts all afternoon, no ticket needed. It's a little outside our usual East Cobb range, but it's a short drive and an easy free afternoon if you want to make a day of it with the kids.

Speaking of the kids, Family Canoe Day at the Chattahoochee Nature Center is built for first timers, so the guides cover everything out on Beaver Pond. Admission to the grounds is included, so we're planning to hang around for a picnic after. It's $25 a person and you have to register by Thursday, so don't sit on it.

Dinner this week is easy. If you haven't tried Melt Yard on Whitlock yet, go for the burgers and grab a seat on the back deck.

Local news, a few listings, who's hiring nearby, and the full weekend planner are all below.

When was the last time you actually looked at your homeowners policy?

For most folks in East Cobb, the honest answer is "when we bought the house." Which would be fine, except home values around here are up $150K to $200K+ since 2020. If your policy hasn't kept up, your dwelling limit is probably short of what it would actually cost to rebuild today.

That gap won't show up on your bill. It only shows up when you file a claim, which is the worst time to find out.

Peachy Insurance is Atlanta-based and built to make this kind of check painless. No call center, no upselling, no runaround. Just a licensed local agent who looks at your full picture and gives you a straight answer on where you stand.

Three things worth a quick look while it's on your mind:

  • Home: Whether your dwelling limit still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild your house right now

  • Auto: Whether your coverage is current for every vehicle you drive, plus rental reimbursement if yours ends up in the shop

  • Bundle: Whether pairing home and auto makes sense for your situation (East Cobb households sometimes save up to 25%)

Takes about 5 minutes. Free, no pressure.

Check us out here, we are open text/call (770) 520-7095 (Mon-Fri, closed weekends)

Braves Country Fest at Truist Park

Truist Park, Atlanta

Game ticket required; free activations at The Battery
Get tickets

Truist Park, Atlanta

The Braves are trying something they've never done. Braves Country Fest is an all-day country music takeover at Truist Park and The Battery, and it's the first one they've ever thrown, so there's no redo on the inaugural version.

Here's the part worth knowing: everything at The Battery is FREE. Live music, activations, and a full lineup of up-and-coming country acts on the Whiskey Jam stage, no ticket required. Just walk over, grab a drink, and catch a show in the open air.

The big concert is inside Truist Park, and that one you pay for. It’s a little outside of our normal East Cobb range, but the headliners are no joke. Cody Johnson just got named CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, and he's playing alongside Ella Langley, ERNEST, and Mackenzie Carpenter.

So make a free afternoon of it with the kids at The Battery, or buy in for the full concert at night. Either way it's a short drive from East Cobb. Tickets are selling, so if you want the inside show, don't sit on it.

🍽️ Marietta Melt Yard

800 Whitlock Ave, suite 124 Marietta, GA 30064

This is where you go when the kids are bouncing off the walls and nobody wants to sit still for a normal dinner. It's over on Whitlock Ave, and it's part restaurant, part arcade, part whatever theme they're running that month. Full Home Alone setup at Christmas, a Ghostbusters pop-up, a Y2K thing. There are 21 pinball machines in the back and a bar built into an old van. Kids can roam, you can grab a beer, and nobody's checking their watch.

I'll be straight with you: people come here for the vibe more than the food. The melts and burgers are decent comfort food, not life-changing, and the prices run a little high for what you get. But the sweet potato waffle fries are the one thing everybody agrees on, and the pimento cheese balls are a good way to start. If someone at your table needs a gluten-free bun, they've got that covered too.

Walk-in only, no reservations. Every other Tuesday they run trivia at 7 with a host named Josh Waters, which is a fun midweek excuse if you're looking for one.

Price: $$
Hours:
Mon–Thu 11am–9pm
Fri–Sat 11am–10pm
Sun 11am–9pm

⚠️ Heads up: Reviews are split on the food. The atmosphere gets consistent love, but plenty of people flag the burgers as inconsistent and the prices as high for the quality. Go for the experience, order the waffle fries, and you'll have a good time.

⛹️ Windy Hill Athletic Club

135 Interstate N Pkwy, Atlanta, GA 30339

Heads up before you get excited: Windy Hill Athletic Club is a short drive from East Cobb, over near the Battery off Interstate North Parkway. But if you have been thinking about trading up from your regular gym, it is worth knowing about.

This place is more resort than gym. It has been around since 1970 and sits on eleven acres. You get nine tennis courts (four of them domed for winter so you can play year round), two pools, a spa for massages, and a café where the food is actually good. There are over a hundred group fitness classes a week too, from boxing to spin to yoga.

What members keep coming back for is the feel. A lot of them call it a home away from home, and plenty have been there for decades. Parents love the childcare, with two free hours a day on certain memberships. They also throw monthly social parties with food and drinks.

One thing to know: this is a membership club, not a drop-in gym. Call ahead or book a tour to see pricing.

Price: $$$$ (membership-based; pricing by tour)

🌊 Cobb flooding: 17 rescued, debris cleanup stretches 2 more weeks

Recent storms dumped enough rain on Cobb County to trigger 17 swift water rescues, with firefighters pulling residents from floodwaters across the area. Cobb County Fire District Chief Jeremiah Lewis confirmed all 17 were saved safely.

Cleanup from storm debris is ongoing, and county crews say it will take at least two more weeks to clear everything. If you have downed limbs or debris near county roads or drainage areas, contact Cobb County Public Works to get on their list.

More heavy rain is still possible through early this week, so watch for flash flood warnings and stay away from any swollen creeks or low-lying roads.

📋 Mableton and Cobb County lock in services deal after a year of talks

After more than a year of negotiations that ended up in formal mediation, Cobb County and the City of Mableton have reached a proposed agreement covering police, roads, and stormwater services. County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Mableton Mayor Michael Owens both signed off on the framework.

For residents near the Mableton area, this settles a long-running question about who handles basic city services as Mableton continues building out its local government. The agreement still needs final approval, so watch for a public vote in the coming weeks.

🏗️ 288,000-gallon wastewater spill hit a Marietta creek during heavy rains

Heavy rainfall overwhelmed a manhole in Marietta last week, sending roughly 288,000 gallons of wastewater into an unnamed tributary of Proctor Creek. Cobb County Water System officials said the spill has been reported and that the remaining daily flow, nearly 10 million gallons, was treated normally.

If you use any parks or greenways near Proctor Creek, it is worth checking with Cobb County Water System before wading in. Officials have not issued a formal public advisory, but the tributary feeds into a larger watershed.

🔒 Cobb police are deploying counter-drone tech for the FIFA World Cup

With millions of fans expected at metro Atlanta World Cup matches this summer, Cobb County Police are rolling out counter-drone technology to detect, track, and neutralize unauthorized drones near venues and security perimeters.

The new system adds real-time aerial response capability to standard security operations. If you are attending any World Cup events, expect tighter airspace enforcement and be aware that personal drone use near match venues will be restricted.

🍽️ Marietta pizza spot is thriving after a viral Dave Portnoy review

A Marietta pizza restaurant that nearly closed in March, after a car drove through its wall, is now so busy it can barely keep up. A positive review from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy sent a flood of new customers through the door and turned the near-shuttering into a comeback story.

No location details were included in the report, so check Atlanta News First for the full story and address if you want to pay them a visit.

🐾 Meet Smokey, an adult Lab who's been waiting at the shelter

Adult, Labrador Retriever

The puppies at Cobb County Animal Services tend to go fast. The calm, full-grown dogs are the ones who sit and wait. Smokey is one of them. She's an adult Lab, medium sized, and she's been in a kennel for a couple weeks now while younger dogs come and go around her.

Here's the honest part: the shelter hasn't posted much about her personality yet. So I'm not going to make stuff up about her. The real way to know Smokey is to go meet her, and that's exactly what the bonding room is for. You take her back, spend some actual time together, and see how she does with you and whoever else lives in your house before you decide anything.

And look, adult dogs like this are usually the easy ones. She's past the chew-everything-in-sight stage. Often already mellow. Grateful in a way puppies just aren't yet. If you've been on the fence about a younger dog and all the energy that comes with one, a grown Lab might be the smarter call.

Her $115 adoption fee covers all of it: spay surgery, microchip, and vaccines. She goes home ready. Cobb County Animal Services is on Al Bishop Drive in Marietta, open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:30am to 4:30pm, closed Mondays. Walk in, ask for Smokey (ID #55), and an officer will walk the kennels with you to find her.

🎨 Juneteenth Artists Market (AAFTA)

Roswell Cultural Arts Center

This one is further out, but worth planning for. Juneteenth lands on a Friday this year, and Roswell has a genuinely good way to spend part of that afternoon.

The African Americans for the Arts (AAFTA) is hosting a free Artists Market at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, pairing a live marketplace with a juried art exhibit that's been on the walls since June 8th. It's the kind of event that's easy to pop into with kids, easy to linger in as an adult, and under 10 miles from most of East Cobb.

What it is: The Juneteenth Artists Market is a two-hour community gathering in the lobby of the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, organized by African Americans for the Arts. The centerpiece is the annual Juneteenth juried art exhibit, running June 8 through July 8, which showcases visual art across a wide range of styles, mediums, and disciplines, all centered on themes of freedom, identity, and cultural expression. During the market, the artists themselves are present, meaning you can talk directly to the people behind the work, hear what went into each piece, and browse prints and original works available for purchase. The market runs concurrently with the exhibit, so you get the gallery experience and the marketplace in one visit.

Plan it (Friday afternoon, June 19): The event runs from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Friday, June 19. The Roswell Cultural Arts Center is at 950 Forrest Street, Roswell, GA 30075. Parking at the center is generally accessible and free. This is a lobby-based event, so it's stroller-friendly and easy for kids to move around in. No tickets, no registration, no admission fee. Just show up.

At the market (1-2 hours): The lobby setup lets you move between the gallery walls and the artist tables at your own pace. Some visitors will spend 20 minutes, others will stay the full two hours talking to artists and looking closely at the exhibit pieces. The exhibit itself spans a wide range of visual styles, so there's something to connect with even if contemporary art isn't your usual thing. If you find a piece you want to take home, artists will have prints and original works priced for real people, not just collectors.

Logistics: Free admission and open to the public. No registration required. Located at 950 Forrest Street, Roswell, GA 30075. The event runs 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on June 19 only. The juried exhibit continues through July 8 if you want to return for a quieter look at the gallery after the market day.

Heads up: The market is a two-hour window, not an all-day event. If you're coming from East Cobb during a workday, plan your arrival for no later than 3:30 PM to give yourself time to browse without rushing. The exhibit itself stays up through July 8, so a return visit is worth considering even if you can only stop by briefly on the 19th.

Work From Home? Your Homeowners Policy Probably Doesn't Cover Your Business Stuff

If you run any kind of business from home, even part-time freelance work, your standard homeowners or renters policy likely gives you very limited protection for business equipment.

Most policies cap business property coverage at around $2,500 at home and just $500 if gear leaves the house. That means a stolen laptop used for client work might not be fully covered, and liability from a client visit to your home office almost certainly isn't.

The good news is that a simple endorsement added to your existing policy can often raise those limits for a pretty small annual cost.

Not sure if your current policy covers how you actually use your home? Your Peachy agent can take a quick look with you.

This week: Jobs hiring in East Cobb, Marietta, and nearby

Cobb County Government has more than 100 openings across departments, from GIS specialist and payroll roles to parks and part-time driver positions. The benefits are the draw here: a hybrid pension, four medical plan options, a wellness clinic, and two employee fitness centers.

Cobb County School District is hiring ahead of the new school year, with teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, and lunch monitors all on the list. If you already have a school bus endorsement, the hiring process can move in as little as two weeks.

Avenue East Cobb has restaurant jobs across the board right now. Luga is hiring line cooks, bartenders, and servers, and Giulia Bakery is staffing up cashiers, baristas, and pastry help before it opens. Hard to beat the commute if you live in the 30062.

Six Flags Over Georgia is still hiring lifeguards for the summer if you or your college kid is 18 or older. You have to pass a swim test, but Red Cross certification is preferred, not required, and the job comes with free admission to other parks and Atlanta area attractions.

Bonus help (free): WorkSource Cobb on Commerce Park Drive in Marietta offers free computers, workshops, skills assessments, and one-on-one career help for any Cobb resident, plus programs for ages 16 to 24.
