We're closing out August with something worth getting off the couch for. Sunday the 30th, Roswell Cultural Arts Center is hosting When Rivers Meet, a live performance tracing the Black and Jewish artists who built the American songbook together. Jazz standards, Blues, and Broadway. You already know the music, but this show tells you where it came from and who was in the room when it happened. It’s 4pm Sunday, and it’s the thing I'm most looking forward to this weekend.

Friday night belongs to football. The Blue Devils opened their season in England, of all places, and now the home opener lands at Northcutt Stadium at 7:30 against St. Cloud out of Florida. Ten bucks for any age. But if you'd rather stay on the Square, Kasper and The 911 Band play Glover Park for free at 8pm.

Saturday morning, Cobb County Animal Services is microchipping cats and dogs for free at the Tim D. Lee Senior Center from 9 to 2, no appointment needed. It’s the cheapest insurance you will ever get on a pet who bolts.

One more thing. Scroll down to the pets section and say hi to Iceman, an 11-pound cat who had a family for five years before ending up back at Mostly Mutts. None of that was his fault. You know these songs. You've hummed he jazz standards without thinking about it, shouted the words to the Broadway hits, and felt something land in your chest the first time a blues record really got you.

But do you know where any of it actually came from? Not the tidy version of history, but the real one.

When Rivers Meet traces the creative partnership between Black and Jewish artists who built the soundtrack of America together, from the Mississippi Delta to Tin Pan Alley to the Brill Building. Atlanta jazz vocalist Karla Harris and pianist Joe Alterman perform it live, with the history woven in between the songs. Same music you already love, but with a completely new context around it.

This is not a lecture with a piano in the corner. It's a real performance that happens to teach you something, and a 4pm curtain drops it nicely between a slow Sunday morning and dinner out.

This is a reliable neighborhood Chinese spot on Sandy Plains. It’s in a strip mall, it’s no frills, and nothing about it is trying overly hard to impress anybody.

But 230+ reviews sitting at 4.1 stars for a low-key local place tells you people keep coming back, and the prices stay low.

The menu is the Chinese-American standards you already know by heart, which is appealing on a Thursday when nobody wants to cook.

Just check the clock before you go. Closed Tuesdays, no lunch on Saturday until noon, and Sunday is a short window, 3pm to 9pm.

Sunday was the one-year mark for the art center on Sandy Plains, and it has turned into the easiest place in East Cobb to try something you have never done before.

The class list runs way past painting. Watercolor and acrylic fluid art fill most of the September calendar, but there is also pottery, stained glass, wood burning, jewelry repair, crochet, soap making, and Cricut sessions for everybody who bought the machine and never opened the box. Kids get camps, homeschool classes, and after school clubs, and seniors get their own days the first and third Monday of the month.

Most single sessions land between $45 and $60, and the Bob Ross nights start at $25, so you can try one before committing to anything. The gallery and supply shop up front sells work from local artists and stays open weekdays 11 to 3, while classes run as late as 9. Marietta's city council voted 5-2 on August 12 to rezone a 10.7-acre site at 1155 Powers Ferry Place, off Delk Road, so part of an existing Prime Storage building can be converted into an 18-megawatt data center. Cheryl Richardson and Daniel Gaddis voted no.

The room hit fire marshal capacity, overflow watched from the lobby, and police escorted some attendees out. And here's the part that caught some people off guard: the council already passed a six-month moratorium on new data center applications on July 8. This one cleared anyway, because the application was filed before the freeze took effect.

Residents near Delk Road and Rottenwood Creek showed up on noise, environmental impact, utility bills, and home values. Supporters made the economic case. The Cobb Chamber of Commerce wrote the council in July backing the application, arguing that data centers strengthen the local economy and give businesses the infrastructure to grow. A few local business owners said the same thing from the podium.

The approval wasn't a blank check. Council attached a list of conditions aimed at noise and the strain on city infrastructure, and the property owner agreed to them before the vote. He also told the council this was a family decision about his own property, and that he has no plans to bring more data centers to Marietta.

What's still open is the rulebook. The city's own analysis found Marietta's zoning code has no standards written specifically for data centers. The moratorium runs through December 31, and that's the window the council has to write some. Buffer rules, megawatt limits, and cost disclosures would govern every application filed after the freeze lifts.

City officials said the week after the vote that they are monitoring threatening comments aimed at city leadership circulating on social media.

U.S. News dropped its latest public high school rankings, and East Cobb showed up near the top. Walton landed at #11 in Georgia and #375 nationally out of more than 27,000 public high schools. Lassiter came in at #12 in the state and #436 nationally. Pope took #25 in Georgia and #823 nationally. Wheeler ranked #54 statewide and #46 nationally among STEM high schools.

Sprayberry (#89) and Kell (#92) made the top 100 too, which means every East Cobb high school on the list finished inside Georgia's top 100. Before you print it out for the fridge, know what the number is measuring: state test results, graduation rates, and AP and IB participation.

The Cobb County Commission voted 3-2 on August 18 to approve a daycare at the northeast corner of Stilesboro Road and Dennis Kemp Lane, near the West Cobb Regional Library in Kennesaw. Keli Gambrill and JoAnn Birrell voted against it. Lisa Cupid, Erick Allen, and Monique Sheffield voted for it.

If you've been hunting for infant or toddler care on that side of the county, here's the number that matters. The operator is Creative World Schools, and the center is planned for roughly 167 kids, from infants through pre-K. It would be the chain's second Cobb location. The first is in Vinings on Cumberland Parkway.

Traffic is why it barely passed. County zoning staff recommended denial, saying the Stilesboro and Dennis Kemp intersection already backs up at certain hours. Creative World agreed to install a traffic signal there, stagger class start and end times, and require parents to walk inside for drop-off and pickup instead of idling in a car line.

Residents objected on traffic, noise, and neighborhood impact, and some of those same residents opposed adding the signal. If you drive Stilesboro through that stretch or use the West Cobb Regional Library on Dennis Kemp, the light is the change you'll actually feel day to day.

The Marietta High Blue Devils flew to Loughborough University in England to open the 2026 season against the NFL Academy on Thursday, August 20, and they lost 44-24. The game streamed on the NFL UK and Ireland YouTube channel. Not a sentence you get to write about Cobb County high school football very often.

They're home now. The real home opener is Friday, August 28 at 7:30 PM against St. Cloud (Florida) at Northcutt Stadium. Ten bucks at the gate, any age. If you've got a Blue Devil in the family, or you just want somewhere to be on a Friday night, go.

Keep Cobb Beautiful and the Cobb County Public Library started collecting household alkaline batteries at seven branches on August 17, and it's free. They take AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V at the circulation desk. The East Cobb branch (4880 Lower Roswell Road), Mountain View Regional on Sandy Plains, and Switzer on Roswell Street are all on the list.

Hand them to staff instead of dropping them in a bin, because they tape the terminals before the batteries go into the collection bucket. Small thing. But if you've got a junk drawer full of dead AAs you've been guiltily not throwing away, that gets solved on your next library run.

Iceman was adopted from Mostly Mutts as a kitten. He had a family for five years. Then their situation changed, and he came back to the rescue through no fault of his own. He's 11 pounds now, fully grown, and settling into a foster home while he waits on the next chapter.

He's a hang-with-you cat. Not needy, not aloof. He wants to be in the room with his people, watching the world go by from whatever spot he's decided is his.

He did great with four kids in a previous foster placement, so a family with children who know how to be calm around a cat should be a good match. Other cats are the one caveat. He's done best without another male around. A female roommate could work, but it would take a proper introduction to know for sure.

He's neutered, microchipped, current on vaccines, and combo tested negative. Adoption fee is $175 and he's in Kennesaw with Mostly Mutts. He's already proven he knows how to live in a house without wrecking it, which makes the first two weeks a lot easier on whoever takes him.

One more thing while you're thinking about it. Iceman's $175 fee is set by Mostly Mutts, which is its own rescue. But the county shelter is running a separate deal worth knowing about. Cobb County Animal Services has dropped adoption fees to $10 on every cat, dog, puppy, and kitten through Monday, August 31. That's 1060 Al Bishop Dr in Marietta. If ten bucks is what finally gets you through the door, this weekend is the window. Check hours and who's still available before you drive over, because a promotion like this moves animals fast.

Friday is the second to last day of CNC's extended summer hours, which have run since May 25. The trails, the river boardwalk, and the Butterfly Encounter are all open until 5, and Friday is a good deal quieter than the Saturday crowd.

Twenty two miles of trails, cannon emplacements, and a visitor center with a film and a museum, all about fifteen minutes from East Cobb. The visitor center closes at 5 but the grounds stay open until 8:30, so a late Friday walk up the mountain road works.

Lee Senior Center on Sandy Plains Road. No appointment, no sign up, no cost. Just show up with your pet.

What it is: A chip about the size of a grain of rice goes under your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Takes seconds, no anesthesia. Unlike a collar or a tag, it can't fall off on a trail or get pulled off in a scuffle. The chip carries a unique ID number that any shelter or vet office can scan.

Plan it: The window is five hours, 9am to 2pm, so you've got real flexibility, though earlier tends to mean shorter lines at county events. Cats need a secure carrier. Dogs need a leash, and not a retractable one, because the waiting area will have other animals in it.
