Welcome to the 69 new readers who joined 6,040 other East Cobb residents this week.
Hey, East Cobb!
If you want an easy Friday night this week, the Marietta Square First Friday Art Walk is a great choice. Galleries open late, live music in pockets around the Square, and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art is free to walk into. We're planning to wander for an hour or so and then grab dinner somewhere on the Square after.
Saturday we're going to Seed Kitchen & Bar at Merchants Walk for a proper dinner out. Doug Turbush's place has been a quiet East Cobb favorite for years, and the menu changes with the season, so it's never the exact same trip twice. Reservations are smart for the weekend. If you want a real night out without driving into Buckhead, it's about as good as it gets around here.
And if you've been staring at a blank corner of the yard since spring, Pike Nurseries on Johnson Ferry is where we end up. Employee-owned, plenty of staff who actually know what's going to survive a Georgia summer, and the native-plant section is the move. June is a good window to get something in the ground before the heat really lands.
In the pets section this week, meet Victor. He's a five-year-old Bulldog mix from Mostly Mutts, about 44 pounds, and the volunteers say his whole body wags when he's happy. Not just the tail. He's looking for a home where he'd be the only dog. Go read his full profile if you've got the room.
More in the issue below, including local news, the full weekend planner, and a roundup of who's hiring nearby.

What's on your to-do list now that school's out?

When was the last time you actually looked at your homeowners policy? For most folks in East Cobb, the honest answer is "when we bought the house." Which would be fine, except home values around here are up $150K to $200K+ since 2020. If your policy hasn't kept up, your dwelling limit is probably short of what it would actually cost to rebuild today. That gap won't show up on your bill. It only shows up when you file a claim, which is the worst time to find out. Peachy Insurance is Atlanta-based and built to make this kind of check painless. No call center, no upselling, no runaround. Just a licensed local agent who looks at your full picture and gives you a straight answer on where you stand. Three things worth a quick look while it's on your mind:
Home: Whether your dwelling limit still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild your house right now
Auto: Whether your coverage is current for every vehicle you drive, plus rental reimbursement if yours ends up in the shop
Bundle: Whether pairing home and auto makes sense for your situation (East Cobb households sometimes save up to 25%)
Takes about 5 minutes. Free, no pressure.

⭐ 27th Annual Flying Colors Butterfly Festival
Chattahoochee Nature Center
9135 Willeo Rd, Roswell
Saturday, June 6 (9 AM - 3 PM)
Sunday, June 7 (10 AM - 5 PM)
$25, kids 2 and under free | Get Tickets
The Butterfly Festival at Chattahoochee Nature Center is one of those weekends that's been on the East Cobb calendar for so long it almost feels like part of the season. This is year 27. Two full days of live butterfly encounters, pollinator experts walking you through what's actually flying around your yard, an interactive Migration Game spread across the CNC grounds, plus live entertainment, food, and a plant sale focused on pollinator-friendly species you can take home and put in the ground.
It's a real outing, not a quick stop. Plan two to three hours, bring water, wear shoes that can handle gravel paths. CNC is about 20 minutes from most of East Cobb, just over the river in Roswell. Saturday tends to be the busier day and Sunday is the longer one (open until 5). Advance tickets are smart, especially if you've got a stroller and want to skip the line.
Good pick if you've got kids who liked the dinosaur summer reading theme and now need a real-world hook to keep that energy going. Also a quietly great date-day option if you don't have kids and just want to spend a Saturday morning outside doing something that isn't yard work.

🍽️ Seed Kitchen & Bar
While we’ve featured Seed before, its one of the best restaurants in East Cobb and due for a refresher with its Summer menu. It's tucked into Merchants Walk off Johnson Ferry, modern American, and the room is the right kind of stylish without trying too hard. Good for date night, birthday dinners, or that one work dinner where you actually want the food to be the point. Chef Doug Turbush has been running it for years now and it still feels like one of the better restaurants in this part of town.
The menu shifts with the season, so what's good in June isn't what was good in February. People keep coming back for the wood-grilled steaks and the seasonal vegetable plates, both of which have a strong following. Cocktails are made with care, not sleep-walked, and the wine list runs deep enough that the staff can actually steer you. Sunday brunch is a quieter way in if you want to try it without committing to a full dinner.
Reservations are smart for Friday and Saturday. Parking at Merchants Walk is easy. If you've never been, this is the East Cobb dinner spot people from out of town don't expect us to have.

Pike Nurseries (East Cobb)
If you've been meaning to do something with your yard before it gets too hot, Pike Nurseries on Johnson Ferry is where to start. It's been a Southern garden-center icon for over 60 years, and the East Cobb location is the one we end up at most. Employee-owned, which you can feel the minute you walk in. The staff isn't trying to upsell you on irrigation systems you don't need. They'll ask what's already in your yard, what you've killed before, and what kind of sun you actually get, and then point you to plants that have a real shot.
The selection runs deep across blooming annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, houseplants, and pottery. They carry a strong native-plant section, which matters if you want stuff that survives a Georgia July without daily watering. The Marietta location also does at-home landscape design appointments where someone walks the yard with you, asks the right questions, and comes back with a custom plan that fits your budget. Worth it if you've been staring at a blank corner of the yard for two years not knowing what to do.
This is also the right time of year to come. The summer color selection is at its peak in June, the staff has a few months of pollen behind them, and most plants you put in now have a full growing season to settle in before fall.

🗳️ Georgia primary runoffs are set for June 16, with two lieutenant governor races on the ballot
Several statewide races didn't get settled on May 19 and are heading to a runoff on Tuesday, June 16. The biggest one for Georgia: the Republican lieutenant governor race, where state Sens. John F. Kennedy (about 27%) and Greg Dolezal (about 23%) advanced after no candidate cleared 50%. On the Democratic side, Josh McLaurin and Nabilah Islam Parkes are also in a lieutenant governor runoff.
Early voting begins Monday, June 8. If you voted in the May 19 primary, you can only vote in the runoff for the same party. If you didn't vote in May, you can pick a ballot now. Check your polling place at the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter Page before you go.

📚 Marietta City Schools reading scores are up after five years of literacy coaches in every building
Marietta City Schools is making the rounds in state news this month, and for good reason. Since the district put literacy coaches in every elementary school in 2021, third-grade reading scores have climbed 17 points and the share of students reading at or above grade level is up 11%. The district has outpaced both the state and Metro Atlanta in English Language Arts at every grade level since 2022.
That track record is part of why Gov. Brian Kemp signed HB 1193, the Georgia Early Literacy Act of 2026, into law on May 5. The new law now requires literacy coaches in every K-3 elementary school across the state, and Marietta's program was one of the models used to write it.
If you've got a younger kid in MCS, it's a useful data point heading into the next school year. If you're outside the district boundary, expect to see this approach scale into Cobb and beyond.

🏛️ Affordable housing is Cobb's top priority for the year ahead, Cupid says
Chairwoman Lisa Cupid delivered the 2026 State of the County address on May 27 at Jim Miller Park (it had a FIFA World Cup theme, thundersticks included). The substantive headline: she named affordable housing as a central priority for the coming year, alongside continued investments in infrastructure and public safety.
That matters in East Cobb because the conversation around what affordable housing means here, and where it goes, has been simmering for a while. Expect the topic to come up in commission discussions through the summer.

🏗️ Toll Brothers' new luxury subdivision at Johnson Ferry-Shallowford is moving forward
Toll Brothers is building Shallowford Pointe, a gated 75-home subdivision on land facing Johnson Ferry Road at Waterfront Drive, with sales expected to open later in 2026. The bigger thing for daily life here is the related Georgia DOT project at the intersection: a $2.7 million signal and lane reconfiguration intended to ease the congestion and accident pattern that has plagued the corner for years.
If you drive Johnson Ferry between Roswell Road and the Chattahoochee, this is the project worth tracking. Lane changes are coming, and that intersection isn't going to feel the same on the other side.

🏊 Sewell Park Pool is open for the season
A practical one: Sewell Park Pool at 2055 Lower Roswell Road is back open for the summer as of May 30. It runs Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 AM to 8 PM, with closures on June 26, July 24, and August 28 for routine maintenance. Cost is $2 for Marietta residents, $3 for non-residents. Cash and easy. If you've got kids who don't want to spend the summer indoors and you don't feel like driving to Mountain View, this is the closest in-East-Cobb option.

🐾 Meet Victor
Victor is a five-year-old Bulldog mix, about 44 pounds, and his whole body wags when he's happy. Not just the tail. The whole thing. The volunteers at Mostly Mutts call him a super sweet boy, and he went through the prison training program, so he's had real, consistent work put into him.
He's got a big personality and a lot of love to give. He's calm and angelic at bath time, great with one-on-one attention, and the kind of dog who just wants to be with his person. He can get mouthy when he's excited, which has occasionally turned into an accidental skin grab, but he redirects easily and the trainers will show you exactly what works for him.
He'd do best as your only dog since he hasn't clicked with other dogs. Kids 15 and up are a better fit given his strength and excitement level around younger ones. If that sounds like your house, he's got a lot to offer. Mostly Mutts is in Marietta. Reach out through their website or give them a call to meet Victor.

🎨 Marietta Square First Friday Art Walk
A self-guided evening loop around the Square with galleries open late, live music in pockets, and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art letting people in for free. It's one of those nights where the Square just feels alive, and you can show up with no plan and still walk away happy.
What it is: A monthly first-Friday walking tour celebrating local artists, with shops, boutiques, and galleries staying open later than usual. Free gallery openings, live performances scattered throughout, free admission to the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art.
Plan it: Park once and wander. The whole loop is the perimeter of the Square, so you can drop in and out of as many or as few stops as you want. Good with kids if you keep it to an hour, good without kids if you want to make a real evening of it and grab dinner on the Square after.
Around the Square: Local artists at multiple gallery openings, live music acts performing in different spots, a chance to actually meet the makers behind the work. Restaurants stay busy, so if you want a table later in the evening it's worth booking ahead.
Logistics: Free, no registration needed. Strollers are fine. Bring cash or card if you plan to shop or grab food. Parking is free on the Square after 6 PM, and the decks off Atlanta Street are usually the easiest bet.
Heads up: It runs every first Friday, so if June 5 doesn't work, July 3 and August 7 are already on the calendar.

Work From Home? Your Homeowners Policy Probably Doesn't Cover Your Business Stuff
💡 Insurance Tip: Work From Home? Your Homeowners Policy Probably Doesn't Cover Your Business Stuff
If you run any kind of business from home, even part-time freelance work, your standard homeowners or renters policy likely gives you very limited protection for business equipment. Most policies cap business property coverage at around $2,500 at home and just $500 if gear leaves the house. That means a stolen laptop used for client work might not be fully covered, and liability from a client visit to your home office almost certainly isn't. This week: Jobs hiring in East Cobb, Marietta, and nearby
This week's roundup of who's hiring nearby. A few quiet movers, a few you'd expect, and one brand-new place that's still building its team.
Lockheed Martin (Marietta)
The aerospace facility off South Cobb Drive is one of the largest employers in Cobb, and they're staffing across both technical and skilled trades right now. Recent postings include Industrial Electronics Technician, Cyber Systems Security Engineer, Software Engineering Manager, Systems Engineer, and Manufacturing Planner Supervisor. Active clearance helps but isn't required for every role.
Wellstar Health System (Marietta HQ)
Wellstar is headquartered here and is steadily hiring across both clinical and administrative roles as their system continues to expand. Nursing, imaging, patient access, billing, and IT all have active reqs. Worth a look even if you're not in healthcare directly, the admin and corporate side employs a lot of people.
Home Depot Store Support Center (Cumberland)
The corporate headquarters along I-75 in the Cumberland/Galleria district is a quiet but consistent hiring engine, especially for tech, merchandising, and supply chain roles. Hybrid schedules are common. Solid pick if you want a corporate job that doesn't require commuting downtown.
Sterling Estates of East Cobb
The senior living community on Lower Roswell Road continues to hire across caregiving, dining services, housekeeping, and administrative roles. Flexible shifts available, and reviews consistently mention a supportive work culture. Good entry point for healthcare-adjacent work without a clinical degree.
Luga (East Cobb, opening soon)
A brand-new modern Italian spot is gearing up to open in East Cobb and is staffing the full back and front of house: Line Cook, Prep Cook, Dishwasher, Busser, Bartender, and Barback. If you want a clean slate at a place still figuring out its rhythm, ground-floor openings are often the most rewarding.
Cobb County School District
The district is heading into hiring season for the 2026-2027 school year, with openings across teaching, paraprofessional, bus driver, child nutrition, and facilities roles. Bus driver pay was bumped again last cycle, and they train you and pay for your CDL.
